Cuskelly and Schweizer awarded Most Outstanding Performer
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Track & Field finished out their final home meet of the season on a strong note, as Tigers recorded first-place finishes on the second day of the 21st annual Tom Botts Invitational. Included in the first-place finishes was a season-best jump from junior Landon Cuskelly (El Dorado, Kan.), who recorded a 2.18m (7-1.75) leap to take first in the high jump. Other first place finishes belonged to redshirt senior Valeska Halamicek (Weldon Spring, Mo.) in the 800m run, freshman Chris Conrad (O'Fallon, Ill.) in the 800m run, junior Karissa Roman (Kewanee, Ill.) in the high jump, and redshirt junior Gabi Jacobs (Bloomington, Ill.) in the discus.
Following the meet, Cuskelly was named the Male Most Outstanding Performer of the meet as his jump ranks in the top-20 in the NCAA this season. Senior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) was named the meet's Female Most Outstanding Performer after she set the school and meet record in the 1500m run Friday evening.
NOTABLE TIGERS
Cuskelly, in his first Tom Botts Invitational, had a dominant high jump performance, as his clearance of 2.18m (7-1.75) ranks fifth in school history, matching Steve Herndon's 1966 mark. The jump will likely qualify Cuskelly for the NCAA West Preliminary meet, as it currently ranks sixth in the NCAA West Region and 17th overall in the NCAA this season. Mizzou took home the top spot in the women's high jump as well, as Roman cleared 1.72m (5-7.75) to take first.
Jacobs set a new meet record in women's discus throw, as the 2017 NCAA All-American recorded an impressive season-best mark of 58.11m (190-7). The throw was an improvement from her mark of 55.42m (181-10) at the John McDonnell Invitational (April 14), and currently ranks eight in the NCAA West region this season.
In the men's 800m run, Conrad tallied his second first-place finish of the meet, as the Tiger freshman crossed the finish line at 1:51.45. Conrad was one of three Tigers to finish in the top-ten of the men's race as redshirt senior Cain Winebrenner (Kansas City, Mo.) finished second and senior Mark Sheridan (Ballwin, Mo.) finished fourth. In the women's race, three Tigers finished in the top-five. Halamicek finished first at 2:10.14, while redshirt freshman Karina Liz (Aurora, Ill.) finished third and redshirt freshman Melissa Menghini (Fenton, Mo.) finished fifth.
UP NEXT
Next, the Tigers will travel to Des Moines, Iowa for the Drake Relays. The Relays are scheduled to begin Thursday, April 26, with the distance carnival and last throughout Saturday.
