COLLEGE STATION, Texas. – The Mizzou men's and women's swimming and diving teams compiled five top eight finishes, including second in the men's 800 free relay, to highlight day one action at the 2018 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday at the Rec Center Natatorium in College Station, Texas.
The Tiger men sit sixth with 129 points after four events, while the women are 10th with 100 points.
KEY TIGERS
Missouri closed the night with a school record and second-place finish in the men's 800 free relay. The quartet of sophomore Giovanny Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil), junior Mikel Schreuders (Oranjestad, Aruba), freshman Grant Reed (Austin, Texas) and junior Sam Coffman (Centennial, Colo.) clocked a 6:15.38 to shatter the old Mizzou record by almost three full seconds. Additionally, Lima swam a personal-best 1:34.22 200 free in the leadoff leg.
The Tiger women just missed a school record of their own, as seniors Erin Metzger-Seymour (Westminster, Colo.), Sharli Brady (Burlington, Ky.), junior Courtney Evensen (Golden Valley, Minn.) and freshman Sammie Jo Porter (Flower Mound, Texas) took fifth in 7:01.06, only 0.04 off the record. Metzger-Seymour led off the relay with a scorching 1:44.80 to move her into second all-time in the Tiger record books in the 200 free.
Mizzou performed well in the diving well as well, as senior Kendra Kieser (Plano, Texas) and junior Kyle Goodwin (Aurora, Colo.) both made their respective springboard final for top eight finishes.
Kieser tallied a career-high 316.50 in women's 1-meter finals to earn sixth on the event. The finish was the senior's highest in an SEC final, as she took seventh on 1-meter a year ago and seventh on 3-meter in 2016.
Goodwin nabbed eighth-place on men's 3-meter with a finals score of 378.45. However, he erupted for a new personal-high 407.15 in preliminary action.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Greg Rhodenbaugh
"In swimming, we didn't really arrive at the meet until the 800 free relay at the end. For some reason we were distracted on the first two relays, whether it was the noise or the venue. We finally settled down and swam like we could on the 800 free relay."
Mizzou Head Diving Coach Jamie Sweeney
"All four of our women scored today. Kendra was a superstar. She was rock solid and in a great frame of mind. She hit all our dives and went her highest-ever score in the 1-meter final. She did such a great job. Kyle finally broke 400, and it was when it mattered most. He went up against the best divers in the country and held his own."
