In Mizzou's 51-14 season-opening win over Tennessee Martin, junior RB Damarea Crockett (Little Rock, Ark.) and senior QB Drew Lock (Lee's Summit, Mo.) set the pace for the Tigers on the first drive of the game. The two combined for all 62 yards of the drive.
"I think we preached it all offseason just to start fast in general this year," Lock said. "We try to start fast in practice and we came out and did what we do in practice. That needs to be a thing we keep doing throughout the year."
Mizzou started the drive on their own 38 after the defense forced the Skyhawks into a 3-and-out on the opening drive of the game. The Tigers would then drive 62 yards on nine plays in 2:58 and finish the drive with a touchdown.
Crockett took a handoff from Lock to start the drive and promptly ran 11 yards for a Mizzou first down. Following his run, Crockett picked up another first down on an 11-yard catch and run.
Crockett finished the drive with 21 rushing yards on five attempts. The Mizzou running back capped the drive with a nine-yard rush for a touchdown for Mizzou.
Lock showed good awareness as he began his day a perfect 4-4 for 41 yards during the first drive. Lock found four different receivers during the drive including Crockett, redshirt sophomore TE Albert Okwuegbunam (Springfield, Ill.), redshirt junior WR Johnathan Johnson (Memphis, Tenn.), and senior WR Nate Brown (Suwanee, Ga.).
"Drew played amazing," Crockett said. "You can tell he's a lot more confident and that's what we need out of Drew Lock. Drew played like Drew."
The Tigers worked quickly forcing the Skyhawks to burn a timeout with 11:03 left in the first quarter after Lock completed passes on back-to-back plays. The offense kept up the fast pace for the majority of the game keeping the Skyhawks on their heels. The Tigers put up 38 first half points on the Skyhawks.
"It felt like we were actually going pretty fast," Crockett said. "I feel like the tempo worked to our advantage today for sure."
The Tigers were able to build off that first drive as the offense was successful on its first six drives of the game with five ending in touchdowns and one in a field goal. The offense utilized a balance attack with 21 pass attempts and 23 rush attempts during those six drives.
Crockett finished the game with a touchdown and 42 rushing yards on 12 attempts. Crockett also added two receptions for 18 yards to his stat line. Lock finished the game completing 19 of 25 passes with 289 passing yards and four touchdowns. Lock was pulled from the game in the third quarter in favor of QB Taylor Powell.
"It feels good, it made me realize what type of football team we really are," Crockett said. "That sound football, being disciplined, that's what we need to win games.
Mizzou will next take on Wyoming at Memorial next Saturday, Sept. 8, at 6:00 p.m. (CT).
