Newcomers Lead the Way on Day One of UGA Fall Classic

Tigers earn two doubles wins in Georgia
ATHENS, Ga. – Mizzou Tennis earned a pair of doubles victories on the first day of the Puerto Rico Fall Classic, held Friday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The tournament was moved from Puerto Rico to Athens late last week following the impacts of Hurricane Irma on the Caribbean.
The Tigers came out of the gate strong, winning two out of three doubles matches against fellow Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt. The team of sophomore Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) defeated the Commodore duo of Kurtz and Meyer, 6-3. A pair of freshmen, Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) and Ally Noback (Alpharetta, Ga.) teamed to beat Vandy's Dvorak and Robinette by the same 6-3 score.
The following session saw five Mizzou players go up against Georgia for a set of singles matches, with Noback separately facing Vanderbilt's Robinette and pushing the match to a third set.
"I was proud of the fight the girls showed today. We did a good job of being aggressive and setting the tone early in the matches," said Head Coach Colt Gaston. "You never know what to expect with a young team this early in the season, but they showed a lot of heart out there today, and we just need to execute down the stretch a little bit better. We are looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow and building."
Play in Athens resumes Saturday morning, with the Tigers scheduled to face Georgia in doubles action and Clemson in singles play, and continues Saturday afternoon with the Tigers and Commodores matching up for singles competition.
