Eight Tigers To Swim in Saturday's Open Water Championship

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Eight members of the Mizzou men's and women's swimming teams will compete in the second annual College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) National Collegiate Open Water Championship on Saturday, Sept. 16 at Lone Star Lake in Lawrence, Kansas. The 5,000-meter race (3.1 miles) will consist of a two-loop swim with the women's race beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the men's competition beginning at 10:30 a.m.
The field consists of 54 females and 42 males coming from 19 different colleges and universities across the U.S.
The women's and women's winners will be crowned a CSCAA nation champion. The top team from each race will also be honored. The first three swimmers from each team to cross the finish line receive the points that correspond to their place (the first place swimmer receives one point, the second place swimmer two, etc.). The team with the lowest score will win.
Four men and four women are slated to swim in Saturday's event. Women's competitors include Sharli Brady and Kira Zubar, junior Courtney Evensen and sophomore Azra Avdic, while Mizzou's men's participants include junior Jacob Wielinski, sophomore Giovanny Lima, redshirt freshman Giovanni Gutierrez Lozano and freshman Carter Grimes.
Following the Open Water Championship, the Tiger teams fully open the 2017-18 season at the 12th annual Show-Me Showdown on Friday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
