Tate Schroeder earned her team-best 11th singles win on Friday
COLUMBIA, MO. – No. 44 Mizzou (10-7, 1-5 SEC) received excellent play from freshman Tate Schroeder (Centennial, Colo.) but dropped the match against No. 24 South Carolina 4-2 at the Mizzou Tennis Complex on Friday night. Schroeder won her doubles match, helping Mizzou earn its second consecutive doubles point, and won the No. 3 singles match, 7-5, 6-1
"This was a tough one for us," head coach Colt Gaston said. "But, we shined in a lot of different areas. We can take a constructive loss out of this with Clare Raley stepping up and doing a great job of giving herself an opportunity in the third set. I'm starting to feel more belief. Whether we lose a few and get down, we can fight back and put ourselves in that situation. I want us to be known as a team that's going to fight you to the finish. That's what we are trying to do this year."
With the first set tied at 5-5, Schroeder caught fire, winning eight of the next nine games to cement her first conference victory at the No. 3 position. This was Schroeder's 11th singles victory of the spring and second at No. 3, with her previous No. 3 win came against Utah State on Feb. 1. The win pushes her overall record this spring to 18-8 and her spring singles record to a team-best 11-2.
For the second match in a row Mizzou came out strong in doubles play. At the No. 1 position the No. 64 ranked pairing of senior Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal) and junior Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio) won its second straight doubles match over a ranked opponent, taking down the No. 44 pairing of Paige Cline and Hadley Berg, 6-3. The win gives Santos and Ismail their second conference victory of the year together and eighth overall win as a doubles team, the most of any pairing on the team this season.
To win the doubles point, Mizzou turned to Schroeder and her partner, senior Cassidy Spearman (Laguna Niguel, Calif.). Spearman and Schroeder notched their seventh doubles victory as a pair, taking the No. 2 match, 6-3. The win handed Mizzou its second consecutive doubles point, and its 11th in 17 spring matches.
In singles play, Mizzou got the early win from Schroeder and put together a couple of hard fought matches at No. 5 and No. 6, but ultimately fell just short in its comeback efforts.
Mizzou will be back on the courts to face No. 1 Florida on Sunday at 12 p.m. The match will be at the Mizzou Tennis Complex and admission is free.
