Mizzou improved to 8-2 on the season
MINNEAPOLIS – Mizzou completed a pair of 4-0 shutouts on Saturday in Minneapolis, blanking Memphis and South Dakota. The Tigers finished their season-opening 10-match road trip with an 8-2 overall record.
After winning five out of 10 matches against Memphis players in the fall season, Mizzou left no doubt in a dominant performance in dual action, winning 4-0 on Saturday morning. Mizzou continued its trend of phenomenal doubles play and solid singles play as the squad secured its third straight victory.
The doubles pairing of seniors Cassidy Spearman (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal) won its fifth straight doubles match at No. 2 and junior Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio), with her partner freshman Tate Schroeder (Centennial, Colo.), took the No. 3 match to win the doubles point for Mizzou. Mizzou has now won the doubles point in each of its last seven matches.
Singles play was dominant as Mizzou put together a series of strong performances. Santos won the No. 2 singles match 6-3, 6-1 for her second singles victory of the spring. Schroeder followed that up with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4, pushing her singles record to 7-1. Mizzou clinched its third straight victory with a win by Ismail at the No. 5 spot. She put together a 6-3, 6-3 win to increase her overall win total to 23 this year.
Mizzou finished its weekend in style Saturday night by shutting out South Dakota, 4-0. Mizzou has now blanked three of its last four opponents.
The Tigers controlled doubles play from start to finish. They have now claimed the doubles point in nine of their 10 matches this year. Spearman and Santos grabbed a sixth straight victory, winning 6-2, to push the pairing's record to 6-0. Lashway and junior Clare Raley secured the doubles point for Mizzou with a 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. Mizzou now holds a 17-6 doubles record this spring as a team.
Mizzou took care of business in singles play, getting wins from Raley, Santos, and freshman Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Raley posted an impressive 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6. The win gave Raley her third win of dual play and Mizzou a 2-0 lead. Santos was next to win as she picked up her second singles victory of the day. Santos dominated all weekend, finishing with an overall record of 5-0 in three matches. She dominated in the No. 2 spot, taking the match 6-1, 6-0. Middlebrooks put the finishing touches on the victory by winning the No. 5 match 6-2, 6-1. Her singles record this spring improved to 4-1 and her overall singles record now rests at 12-4.
Mizzou won its three matches over the weekend by a combined 12-1. The Tigers return to Columbia riding a four-match win streak.
