Senior Cassidy Spearman earned her first singles win of the spring
MANHATTAN, KAN. – Mizzou Tennis (4-1) earned its third straight dual victory, Friday afternoon, by securing a 4-2 win over Kansas State (4-3). The Tigers leaned on the hard work of senior Cassidy Spearman (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and freshman Tate Schroeder (Centennial, Colo.) to secure the team's fourth victory of the season. Spearman earned her first singles victory of the spring and improved her doubles record to a team-best 3-1, while Schroeder improved her singles record to a team best 4-0 in duals.
The Tigers won the doubles point for the third time this season behind a pair of wins from the No. 3 and No. 2 doubles teams. Junior Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio) was paired up with freshman Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) in the No. 3 spot. The duo easily won its match 6-3, in the first doubles appearance of the season for Middlebrooks. Just a few minutes after that, Spearman and her partner, senior Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal), came back from down 1-3 to take the No. 2 matchup, 7-5, and clinch the doubles point for Mizzou.
Singles play was a battle from the start. KSU took the No. 1 and No. 6 matches to claim a 2-1 lead, but soon after that, Mizzou rattled off three singles wins to finish it off. Spearman got the ball rolling for the Tigers, notching her first singles win of the spring season in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.
Kansas State's No. 5 singles player Palma Juhasz suffered an injury and was forced to retire in her match with Middlebrooks. This gave Mizzou the 3-2 match lead and improved Middlebrooks' singles record to 3-0.
Mizzou got the dual-clinching win from Schroeder in the No. 4 spot. The freshman has proved to be quite a reliable asset for the Tigers as she won 6-4, 6-4, giving her a 4-0 singles record in duals and an overall record of 6-1 this spring.
Mizzou takes its three-match win streak to Kansas City for a pair of matches this Sunday as the Tigers are set to face Wichita State at 9 a.m. C.T. and UMKC at 6 p.m. C.T.
