Lewis entered the top-10 in program history among career falls following three pins in Reno
COLUMBIA, Mo. – After another dominant performance at the Reno Tournament of Champions, Mizzou Wrestling redshirt junior 174-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) was named the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week, announced by the league office Thursday. It is the second time this season Lewis has been donned with the MAC's weekly honor after also getting tabbed on Nov. 22 following an individual title at the Lindenwood Open.
Lewis was nearly untouchable in Reno, as the two-time NCAA All-American recorded three pins and a major decision en route to the title at 174 pounds. He opened the tournament with a third period (5:51) fall over Colton Clingenpeel (North Dakota State) before posting a 9-1 major decision over Bruno Nicoletti (Colorado Mesa) to advance to the semifinals. Lewis then recorded back-to-back falls, pinning Daniel Bullard (North Carolina State) at 1:35 in the semifinals and Kimball Baston (Utah Valley) at 1:40 in the finals.
With the four victories, Lewis improves to 16-0 on the season with a team-leading 10 falls. Lewis also leads the team in dual wins (8), dual points (40) and falls in dual competition (4). Lewis' three falls in Reno give him 29 in his career, vaulting him to seventh in program history in career falls. The Tiger junior has been a bonus point machine since being inserted into the starting lineup, recording bonus point wins in 52-of-73 wins (71.2 percent). In addition to being ranked in the top-10 in career falls, Lewis needs three more technical falls and five more major decisions to enter the top-10 in those respective categories.
Mizzou will next compete at the South Beach Duals, Dec. 29-30, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The Tigers will wrestle Kent State and No. 24 North Carolina on Dec. 29, followed by No. 22 Rider and No. 12 Cornell on Dec. 30.
