EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior QB Drew Lock put together yet another jaw-dropping performance as he led Mizzou to a 52-12 victory over UConn Saturday night in East Hartford, Connecticut. Lock etched his name even deeper into the Mizzou record books by connecting on 31 of 37 pass attempts for 377 yards and five touchdowns in the victory. Becoming the first quarterback in Mizzou history to throw for five or more touchdowns in a singles game at least five times in his career.
The accolades don't stop there for Lock, who moved into third place in Mizzou program history in both passing yards (7,298) and touchdowns (55) over his career, behind Mizzou legends Brad Smith and Chase Daniel.
Lock completed 31 of 37 pass attempts tonight, setting new career-highs in both completions, 31, and completion percentage, 83.8. To put that in perspective, Lock's completion percentage ties him with Chase Daniel for the highest of any Mizzou quarterback in program history when facing an FBS opponent, and third most in all competitions.
His five touchdowns today move Lock into a tie with West Virginia's Will Grier for the most touchdown throws in the country this season, with 28, surpassing Lock's previous career high of 23 touchdown passes from last season.
Speaking of best in the country, one of Lock's five touchdown passes came in the form of a 72 yard catch and run by redshirt-sophomore Johnathon Johnson. It was the 10th touchdown connection of 50 or more yards this season for Lock, and third such connection with Johnson thus far. Those 10 touchdown bombs are the most of any team in the country this season.
It's not just the long ball that you have to worry about when trying to stop Lock's arm. His precision on short passes was impressive once more as each of the four other touchdown passes from Lock came within 13 yards of the end zone. Lock showed tremendous touch on his second of two touchdown connections with freshman TE Albert Okwuegbunam, feathering the ball through the UConn defense into the arms of Okwuegbunam on a near perfect nine yard seem route. Lock also fired a pair of short touchdown throws, four and 13 yards, to senior WR J'mon Moore to round out his pristine performance.
Lock has been putting on a quarterbacking clinic over his last five games, connecting on 114 of 166 pass attempts, 68 percent, for 1,668 yards and 20 touchdowns. His confidence and composure has been infectious as the junior captain continues to lead this offense into its second consecutive game of over 50 points.
Lock will have his next chance at history next week against Florida, as Mizzou welcomes the Gators to Faurot Field. Kickoff is set for 11:00 a.m. and can be seen on ESPN2.
