Tigers Win Nine at Day 3 of ITA Regionals

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Mizzou Tennis picked up nine more wins on Day 3 of the ITA Central Regional Championships Presented By Oracle.

The Tigers split their four doubles matches, with each pair winning their Round of 16 matches before falling in the quarterfinals. No. 32 and No. 4 seeded senior Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio) and freshman Marta Oliveira (Lisbon, Portugal) beat the ninth-seeded Oklahoma State team of Guinart & Stresnakova by an 8-4 margin, before falling to the ninth-seeded Kansas team of Nikolaeva & Vogasari. Likewise, the duo of senior Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore Serena Nash (Bradford, England) beat Minnesota's Bihel & Vargas, 8-5 to advance to the Round of 16, but lost to Arkansas' Rice & Carr in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) picked up a pair of straight-set wins in the singles consolation draw. After losing her tournament opener, Kenz has beaten four straight opponents. On Saturday, they were Iowa's Anastasia Reimchen (6-3, 6-4), and Northern Iowa's Gisela Kemper (6-1, 6-0) to advance to the consolation semifinals.

The Tigers' other five players all played exhibition matches, and all five came away with wins. Raley led the way with a 6-1, 6-4 straight-set win over Tulsa's Tamara Kupkova.

HE SAID IT

"I thought we got off to a good start again today in doubles, winning both matches off the start," said Head Coach Colt Gaston. "But we didn't play aggressively enough in the following round against two good teams. In singles, Mackenzy continued to improve in winning both of her matches. I was very happy to see the girls get back out there in singles and win some tough matches. Overall, I was proud of the effort today, and we look forward to building tomorrow."
