COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Men's Basketball (5-8, 0-1) visits Georgia (9-5, 1-1) for its first Southeastern Conference road game of the season, with tipoff scheduled for Noon CT on the SEC Network.
- The Tigers had their best shooting half since the Northwestern State game (Nov. 26) in the first half vs. LSU (Jan. 4), shooting 15-of-32 (46.9) from the field. Mizzou converted 18-of-30 shot attempts (60.0) in the second half vs. Northwestern State.
- Mizzou was powered through its nonconference schedule by the strong play of sophomore forward Kevin Puryear. The Blue Springs, Mo., native leads the Tigers with his 12.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
- In Mizzou's latest two contests, junior forward Jordan Barnett is averaging 16.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per game.
- Mizzou ranks second in the SEC for overall field goal defense, holding opponents to a 39.2-percent mark from the field (306-of-781).
- The Tigers rank second in the SEC for 3-point field goal defense, keeping their foes to a 29.9-percent success rate (87-of-291) from deep.
- Mizzou is once again cultivating a talented, but young roster during the 2016-17 season. According to KenPom.com, the Tigers rank 344th out of 351 NCAA Division I teams in terms of experience.
OPPONENT - GEORGIA
- Entering the matchup Georgia is 9-5 on the year and 1-1 in Southeastern Conference play. The Bulldogs opened conference play with a 96-84 win at Auburn on Dec. 29, before falling to South Carolina, 67-61, on Jan. 7.
- Led by head coach Mark Fox, Georgia opened the season by going 5-2, falling to Clemson on Nov. 11 and Kansas on Nov. 22. The Bulldogs defeated Georgia Tech, 60-43, on Dec. 20 before falling to Oakland, 79-86, in their nonconference finale on Dec. 23.
- Georgia is led by junior forward Yante Maten, who is averaging 20.4 points per game while shooting 54.9 percent from the field (101-184). Senior guard J.J. Frazier is second on the team, averaging 16.0 points per game.
- Maten leads the team in rebounding as well, averaging 8.4 boards per contest, while sophomore forward Derek Ogbeide is second on the team, averaging 6.4 rebounds per game. Maten leads the team with 47 offensive rebounds, while Ogbeide has grabbed 31 offensive boards.
- Georgia is averaging 74.1 points and 38.9 rebounds per game through 14 games, allowing 68.6 points and 33.5 rebounds. Foes of the Bulldogs have shot 40.6 from the field and 33.8 percent from the three-point line.
JB GETS COMFORTABLE
- Junior forward Jordan Barnett (St. Lois, Mo.) would need time shaking the rust off, warned head coach Kim Anderson prior to the Texas transfer becoming eligible. The Tigers' leader was on the mark, as Barnett totaled just seven points and seven rebounds over his first two appearances vs. EIU (Dec. 17) and Illinois (Dec. 21).
- Barnett has effectively acclimated himself now, averaging 16.5 points and 11.0 rebounds over Mizzou's latest two games, resetting his career high in scoring both times. Barnett poured in 18 points vs. LSU (Jan. 4), scoring 14 in the first half on 6-of-9 field goal shooting.
- The former St. Louis Post-Dispatch All-Metro Player of the Year (2014) has asserted himself on the boards, as well. Barnett has led the Tigers in rebounding in back-to-back games, with 13 and nine rebounds, respectively, against Lipscomb (Dec. 29) and LSU (Jan. 4).
PURYEAR POSITIONS HIMSELF AS GO-TO OPTION
- Sophomore forward Kevin Puryear (Blue Springs, Mo.) leads the Tigers in scoring during his second season at Mizzou, averaging 12.7 points per game. It's familiar territory for Puryear, as the former standout at Blue Springs South High School averaged a team-best 11.5 points per game as a freshman.
- With 15 points and seven rebounds vs. LSU (Jan. 4), Puryear scored at least 10 points and snagged at least five rebounds for the ninth time this season and 24th time in his career.
- For Puryear's career, he is averaging 11.7 points per game, along with 5.2 rebounds per game.
- Puryear has scored in double figures in more than half of his games as a Tiger, with 10 or more points in 30-of-43 career games for the Black & Gold.
- Puryear's two season-high marks of 22 points and 10 rebounds both came against No. 11 Xavier (Nov. 17) at the Tire Pros Invitational in Orlando, Fla. The effort was the second double-double of his career.
OFF THE BENCH WORKS FOR PHILLIPS
- Sophomore guard Terrence Phillips (Orange County, Calif.) did not start for the first time in his Mizzou career vs. LSU (Jan. 4), but judging by his play in the game, he was not concerned. Playing 30 minutes off the bench instead, Phillips matched his career high for assists with eight dimes.
- Phillips also scored 12 points (4-of-10 FG, 2-of-7 3PT, 2-of-2 FT) and grabbed seven rebounds against LSU, with the effort going down as his fourth game this season with 10 points or more.
