COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 15 Missouri gymnastics team notched the third-highest score in program history as the Tiger defeated No. 18 Auburn, 197.200-195.350, Friday night at the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Missouri. The Tigers' score was the highest for the team since the 2004 season, when the team posted the top two team totals (197.425 and 197.350) in school history.
Additionally, Mizzou scored a 49.325 on beam to tie the program record on the event and tied the third-best bars score, 49.325, in team history as well.
"I could sense a couple weekends back that things were starting to gel," Head Coach Shannon Welker said. "It's really continued to build. It's a great time of year to be doing this, we're hitting the end of the season and heading into postseason. This is really what I believe they're capable of doing."
The Tigers swept all four events and the all-around titles against Auburn. Sophomore Britney Ward (Ozark, Missouri) won her team-leading ninth and 10th crowns of the season as she earned top honors on beam (career-high-tying 9.950) and tied freshman Aspen Tucker (Lehigh Acres, Florida) with the victory on vault (9.900). Junior Kennedi Harris (Atlanta, Georgia) earned the floor title (career-high 9.950) and sophomore Madeleine Huber (St. Louis, Missouri) claimed the win on bars (career-high-tying 9.925). Tucker added the all-around win with a career-best 39.450.
Mizzou opened the meet with a 49.150 on vault, the team's ninth-consecutive meet with a score of 49.050 or better. Ward and Tucker led the way with their 9.900s, while Harris earned a 9.800 and Huber and junior Shauna Miller (Knoxville, Tennessee) both posted 9.775s.
Huber's 9.925 propelled the Tigers to a 49.350 on bars in the second rotation to tie the third-best Missouri score on the event in program history. Miller went 9.875 to tie a season-high, while junior Becca Schugel (Eagan, Minnesota) and Brooke Kelly (Birmingham, Alabama) and Tucker all posted 9.850s.
The Tigers tallied the program-record-tying 49.325 on beam thanks to five scores of 9.800 or better. Ward tallied a 9.950 for the second week in a row to tie her career-best to anchor Mizzou's lineup. Junior Tia Allbritten (Garland, Texas) earned a career-high 9.875 and Kelly tied her career-best with the same score, while sophomore Allison Bower (Mesa, Arizona) scored a 9.825 and Tucker went 9.800.
A season-best 49.375 on floor closes the Tigers' record-breaking evening. Harris garnered a career-high 9.950 to close out the rotation, her seventh score of 9.900 or better on the season. Tucker claimed a personal-best 9.900, while Schugel tied her personal-best with a 9.900 as well. Additionally, Bower earned a 9.825, Huber a 9.800 and Kelly posted a 9.775.
With the win, Mizzou improved to 9-7 overall and 2-4 in Southeastern Conference competition, while Auburn fell to 0-10 overall and 0-7 in the SEC.
Missouri concludes the regular season on Friday, March 10 as the Tigers host No. 11 Kentucky at 7 p.m. CT at the Hearnes Center.
