Sophomore point guard Phillips voted to chair position by peers to represent all 14 schools at upcoming SEC meetings
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Mizzou Men's Basketball sophomore guard Terrence Phillips (Orange County, Calif.) has been voted chair of the Southeastern Conference Men's Basketball Leadership Council, it was announced Tuesday by the league office.
"It is a tremendous honor to be named chair of the SEC Men's Basketball Leadership Council," Phillips said. "This is not only an outstanding opportunity for me to grow my leadership skills, but also a chance to represent the University of Missouri, a school that has already given me so many amazing opportunities. Also, I'd like to give a huge thank you to the other members of the leadership council for selecting me to this position."
Phillips was selected by a vote of his peers at a meeting of the SEC Basketball Leadership Councils in Birmingham earlier in September. One representative from each of the SEC's 14 institutions comprised the council. In addition, Georgia's Houston Kessler will serve as men's vice chair.
"The basketball council representatives voted four outstanding individuals to represent them as chair and vice chair of their councils," said Misty Brown, the SEC's Director of Student-Athlete Engagement. "These individuals showed outstanding leadership capabilities and great passion for leading their peers on issues related to the sport they play. I'm excited to work with them throughout the legislative process while continuing to help cultivate the leadership skills they possess."
Phillips will attend a portion of the SEC Athletics Directors meeting in March and the SEC Spring Meetings in June.
Earlier this year, the SEC introduced new Student-Athlete Leadership Councils in the sports of football and men's and women's basketball in which, in addition to the conference's longstanding Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), provide student-athletes with additional opportunities to engage with campus leaders and conference office staff.
