Schweizer leads Mizzou women to fifth-place finish in 5000m, Mizzou men finish fifth in 8000m
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Junior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) shaved 13 seconds off her personal-record time to win the Commodore Classic in Nashville, Tenn. on Saturday. Schweizer crossed the finish line first with a time of 16:46.7 in the women's 5000m race, leading the Mizzou Women's Cross Country team to a fifth place finish at Percy Warner Park.
Schweizer, a Second-Team All-SEC performer a year ago, records her second career first-place finish and first since winning the Forest Park XC Festival in St. Louis, Mo. on Sept. 11, 2015. Joining Schweizer in the top-15 was senior Nicole Mello (Columbia, Mo.), who posted a 12th place finish and personal-record with a time of 17:24.1. Not far behind was redshirt junior Kaitlyn Fischer (Pevely, Mo.) and senior Teylar Adelsberger (O'Fallon, Mo.), who finished 36th and 39th overall, respectively,
"Our women raced hard today in some wet and sloppy conditions," said Head Coach Marc Burns. "Karissa looked amazing up front for the win and Nicole had a breakthrough race. It was nice to get Kaitlyn back in the lineup, which helped us big time today. I am excited about how we raced today and the effort that we put out there. This is a great start for our team and we will get back to work these next two weeks"
The Mizzou men's team raced first on the day for the Tigers and also finished fifth overall in the 8000m race. In a field of 261 runners, eight of Mizzou's 10 runners finished in the top-70, led by a 14th place finish from senior Ollie Lockley (Colby, Isle of Man), who passed the finish line with a personal record time of 25:01.2. Redshirt junior Marc Dubrick (DeKalb, Ill.) was next for the Tigers, crossing the finish line 21st with a time of 25:21.0. Redshirt sophomore Zach Cook (Columbia, Mo.) finished third for Mizzou and 36th overall with a time of 25:39.8, followed by his brother, redshirt senior Jordan Cook (Columbia, Mo.), who finished 41st with a time of 25:44.3.
"The men raced well together in a few small packs through half the race," said Coach Burns. "Ollie did a nice job up front for us and Marc moved up throughout the race. Zach looked good today and showed that he wants to be a part of our top group. We are going to be the type of team that has to have a very small 1-5 gap. The mission the next couple of weeks is to close the gap between Ollie and Marc and slam a couple more guys with them."
Mizzou will next race at the Chile Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday, Oct. 1. The trip to Fayetteville will be the first of two for the Tigers this season, who return to Fayetteville on Friday, Oct. 28 for the SEC Championships.
