Sophomore Paige Lowary tosses complete game shutout

COLUMBIA, Mo. - No. 14 Mizzou Softball (39-13, 14-10 SEC) claimed a 2-0 victory on Sunday over South Carolina, taking two-of-three and winning its third consecutive Southeastern Conference series.

Sophomore Paige Lowary (Dallas Center, Iowa) was magnificent in the circle for the Tigers, tossing a complete game shutout against the Gamecocks. Lowary earned her team-leading 22nd victory and 11th complete game of the year. The Tiger lefty allowed five hits while striking out six South Carolina batters.

Sophomore Amanda Sanchez (West Covina, Calif.) opened the afternoon's scoring with a solo home run to right field in the fourth inning. Sanchez's fifth home run of the season was also her third long ball in SEC play, tied for third most on Mizzou.

The Tigers scored for the second consecutive inning in the fifth, following senior Emily Crane's (Troy, Mo.) RBI single. Two runs proved to be all that Lowary needed on Sunday, as she capped off her complete game gem with scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh.

KEY MOMENT

Both pitchers were in a groove early, as the game was scoreless heading into the bottom half of the fourth inning. With one out, Sanchez connected for a moon shot home run over the right field fence. Runs were at a premium on Sunday and Sanchez's long ball proved to be the deciding factor.

Mizzou travels back to Starkville, Miss., on Wednesday, May 11, for the 2016 SEC Softball Tournament. The Tigers earned the sixth seed with today's win and will face the 11th seed South Carolina in the first round. First pitch on Wednesday is scheduled for 11 a.m. (CT).
