Tigers seek second straight SEC series sweep on Sunday
STARKVILLE, Miss. - No. 16 Mizzou Softball (36-12, 11-9 SEC) tallied a 3-1 victory on Saturday evening at Nusz Park, extending its current winning streak to seven games. It marks the Tigers' third seven-plus game winning streak this season.
Freshman Danielle Baumgartner (Mexico, Mo.) delivered her second consecutive strong start in Southeastern Conference play, picking up her 14th win of the season. Baumgartner was effective over 5.0 innings pitched, allowing only one earned while not walking a single batter.
The senior duo of Emily Crane (Troy, Mo.) and Sami Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.) put Mizzou on the scoreboard in the third inning. Crane ripped her 15th double of the season to drive in a runner while Fagan later brought Crane across the plate with an RBI base hit.
Mizzou loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth inning and Fagan produced with a bloop RBI single to right. The run-producing hit secured Fagan's 20th multi-hit game and 13th multi-RBI effort of the season.
Baumgartner was fantastic over five-plus innings of work and gave way to sophomore Paige Lowary (Dallas Center, Iowa) in the sixth inning. Lowary entered in a tough situation as the Bulldogs had two on with no out. The hard-throwing lefthander recorded two strikeouts to key three consecutive outs to get Mizzou out of a jam.
Lowary worked a perfect seventh inning, including two more strikeouts to close out the Tigers' victory. Her dominant relief effort marked her second save of the 2016 campaign.
KEY MOMENT
Mississippi State reached the scoreboard in the sixth inning. Coach Earleywine went to the bullpen with Lowary getting the nod. The sophomore hurler entered a tough situation, as suddenly the tying run was on first base. Lowary answered the bell with two strikeouts to get the Tigers out of the inning.
