Tigers earn first ranked wins of the season
FULLERTON, Calif. – No. 14 Mizzou Softball closed out its weekend at the Judi Garman Tournament in a big way on Saturday with victories over No. 17 Arizona State, 8-0, and No. 22 Baylor, 10-4. The Tigers improved to 13-3 this season and it marked their first two wins over ranked foes this year.
Mizzou dropped its first game this weekend in Fullerton, Calif., but rallied for four consecutive victories. The Tigers' offense once again delivered, producing a .319 average with six doubles, four home runs and 24 RBI.
Against Arizona State, freshman RHP Danielle Baumgartner (Mexico, Mo.) turned in an outstanding performance in a complete game shutout victory. Baumgartner allowed only three hits while striking out five in her third complete game win of the year.
Game two vs. Baylor saw the Tigers' offense score 10 runs on 13 hits. Four Mizzou hitters recorded a multi-hit game against the Bears, highlighted by a season-high three-hit night from senior OF Emily Crane (Troy, Mo.).
The Tigers struck first against Arizona State as the speedy top of the order did damage. Freshman OF Regan Nash (Camden Point, Mo.) and redshirt senior OF Taylor Gadbois (Maryville, Mo.) each posted a single to kick things off. Two batters later, Nash raced home on a wild pitch to put Mizzou on top.
Mizzou scored at least one run in six-of-seven innings against the Sun Devils. The Tigers took control in the fourth inning following freshman 1B Rylee Pierce's (Visalia, Calif.) bases-clearing double. Sophomore OF Morgan Walters (Gainesville, Ga.) delivered Mizzou's first pinch-hit home run of the season in the seventh inning for its final run of the game.
In game two vs. Baylor, Mizzou exploded for nine of its 10 runs after falling behind 2-1 in the third inning. A slew of Bears mistakes (three errors, three wild pitches and two past balls) aided the Tigers' offense along the way Saturday evening.
Freshman OF Regan Nash (Camden Point, Mo.), junior UT Chloe Rathburn (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Gadbois joined Crane as Tigers to record a multi-hit effort against Baylor. Earning her third start in many days, sophomore 2B Paige Bange (Jefferson City, Mo.) launched a solo home run in the fourth inning to key a five-run frame for Mizzou.
KEY MOMENT (GAME 1)
The Tigers tallied one run in each of the first three innings. Leading 3-0 heading to the fourth inning, Pierce one-handed a double off the left field wall to clear the bases and extends Mizzou's advantage to 6-0.
