Mizzou posts two 6-0 wins in doubles play, yields just five games in singles play
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Mizzou Tennis (14-7, 1-6 SEC) picked up a 5-1 victory over Grambling State on Tuesday in New Orleans, La. The match was originally scheduled as the first match of a doubleheader, but the second match against New Orleans was canceled due to lightning in the area. No makeup match will be scheduled. Mizzou took the match against Grambling State with ease, winning both doubles matches, 6-0, before yielding just five games in four singles matches, which were all straight set victories for the Tigers.
Senior Kelli Hine (New Braunfels, Texas) and sophomore Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) moved up to the No. 1 position in doubles play for the match, and the Mizzou duo responded with a resounding 6-0 win over Phonephathep Philavvong and Tafadzwa Chiridza. Junior Brittany Lashway (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Cassidy Spearman (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) also picked up a 6-0 win at the No. 2 position, defeating Joy Jones and Keren Muswere.
In singles play, Mizzou won matches at each of the first four positions in straight sets. No member from Grambling State won more than one game in any set. At the No. 1 position, Hine defeated Joy Jones, 6-1, 6-0, improving to 2-0 this season at the No. 1 position. Sophomore Brianna Lashway (Bradenton Fla.) earned a 6-1, 6-1, victory over Phonephathep Philavvong at the No. 2 position, while Brittany Lashway blanked her opponent, Tanyaradzwa Magunje, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 3 position. At No. 4, Spearman defeated Keren Muswere, 6-1, 6-1.
Freshman Turner Yates (Jackson, Miss.) was leading 4-1 in the first set when an injury she was forced to retire due to injury. No match was played at the No. 6 position.
Mizzou will continue SEC play with a match at Tennessee on Thursday, March 31 beginning at 3 p.m. CT.
