The Tigers earned their first-ever top 10 finish in program history
ATLANTA – The Mizzou men's swimming and diving team finished a program-best eighth at the 2016 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, the team's first-ever top 10 finish at the event. During the four-day meet, held March 23-26 at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Georgia, the Tigers also scored a record 184 points, 51.5 points more than the old mark set last season. The previous best finish for the team was 11th, also set one year ago.
Texas won the team title with 541.5 points, followed by California in second (351), Florida in third (334), North Carolina State in fourth (314), Georgia in fifth (239.5), Alabama in sixth (225) and Tennessee in seventh (188).
Over the course of the Championships, Head Coach Greg Rhodenbaugh's Tigers tallied six top eight finishes, earned nine individual All-America honors, five All-America accolades in relays and set 10 school records. Junior Fabian Schwingenschlogl made history as Mizzou's first NCAA Champion (100 breast) and joined junior Michael Chadwick with two individual first team All-America honors during the meet.
With 15 total All-America selections in his three years as a Tiger, Chadwick already stands as the most decorated swimmer in program history, as he is a six-time first team and nine-time honorable mention honoree.
One day after his 100 breast NCAA title on Friday, Schwingenschlogl followed that up with a third-place performance in the 200 breast. The junior, who took 12th in the event a year ago, was fourth with 50 yards to go but unleashed the fastest final split to move into third with a personal best time of 1:51.84. Schwingenschlogl now owns the highest two finishes by a Mizzou male swimmer in program history.
Also claiming his second first team All-America honor of the meet was Chadwick, who finished sixth in the 100 free after a finals swim of 41.98, barely off his prelims time of 41.94.
Junior Carter Griffin claimed his second career individual honorable mention All-America honor in the 200 back. He broke his own school record by 0.01 with a 1:40.16 in the consolation final to place 12th overall in the event, one spot off his 11th-place finish in 2015.
In the diving well, freshman Kyle Goodwin finished 13th overall on platform to claim the first honorable mention All-America accolade of his young career. He tallied a career best 360.20 in prelims and went 340.50 in the consolation final.
In the final event of the Championships, Mizzou's 400 free relay team of senior Matthew Margritier, freshman Mikel Schreuders, Schwingenschlogl and Chadwick finished 14th with a finals time of 1:52.26.
