Sophomore LHP turned in dominant performances in four appearances
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mizzou Softball sophomore LHP Paige Lowary (Dallas Center, Iowa) was named Southeastern Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, as announced Monday by the SEC office. Monday's award marks Lowary's second career honor from the SEC office.
Lowary played a key role into the Tigers' 5-0 record this past week, posting a perfect 4-0 mark with a microscopic 0.36 ERA. The hard throwing lefthander allowed only one earned run in 19.2 innings pitched while striking out over a batter an inning (22 strikeouts in 19.2 innings pitched).
The sophomore hurler entered in relief in three of her appearances, shutting down the opposition in key moments of the game. Lowary's first relief gem came on Wednesday, March 16, when she tossed 5.0 shutout innings vs. Western Illinois.
Lowary appeared in all three games in a weekend series at New Mexico State from March 19-20, limiting the Aggies' powerful offense to one earned run in 14.2 innings pitched. In game one of a doubleheader on March 19, Lowary was summoned from the bullpen and asked to hold a one-run lead. She passed the test with flying colors as she struck out a season high eight batters in 3.0 shutout frames.
The impressive four-game stretch lowered Lowary's season ERA from 4.28 to 3.21. Her perfect 4-0 record this past week extended her season-best winning streak to seven games. Currently, Lowary's 12 season victories ranks fourth in the SEC.
Lowary and the Tigers return to action later today with a doubleheader at UTEP. First pitch against the Miners is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT) and 3 p.m. (CT). Mizzou heads to Northern Iowa on Wednesday, March 23, for a mid-week clash. Three days later, the Tigers continue their SEC schedule from March 26-28 at No. 6 Alabama.
