LINCOLN, Neb. - The Tigers opened up the two-day Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., on Friday (Feburary 5) with four PR's, and an event win and new All-Time Top Ten mark from freshman Jamie Kempfer, who has now earned top finishes in each of her races this seaosn. Events will continue at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday, starting with the men's shot put, men's triple jump, women's high jump, and women's 200m dash.
Kempfer highlighted the day's events with her third-consecutive event win of the season, making her three-for-three in her first indoor season as a Tiger. Kempfer took control of the 5000m race early on, steadily widening the gap with the rest of the field before crossing in a PR time of 17:00.21, the tenth-fastest performance in Mizzou history. Kempfer is coming off an exciting week, highlighted by the SEC Freshman of the Week honor and a big 5000m win at the Rod McCravy Meet (17:23.55). She bested that time from Kentucky by 23 seconds on Friday, and is the No. 3 time in the current SEC rankings.
Joining Kempfer on the line on the 5000m run was sophomore Ellyn Atkinson, who also crossed in PR fashion with her fourth-place finish in 17:15.16. Atkinson sits at No. 5 in the current SEC rankings, a position she held coming into the weekend after her 17:23.55 finish at the Rod McCravy Meet two weeks ago.
A pair of 400m dash women also walked away from Friday's events with new PR's, as senior Ayo Adewole and junior Sydney Wells both bested their previous top times Friday evening. Adewole closed tenth in the field with a final time of 56.01, while Wells finished in 34th with a 57.50 crossing. Joining them in the field was junior Valerie Thames, who led the foursome with a seventh-place overall finish (55.72), and senior Sandrae Farquharson (18th).
Junior LaQuisha Jackson also had a productive evening, securing her spot in Saturday's 60m dash final after racing to a heat win, fifth overall, in 7.52.
Events for the Tigers will start at noon on Saturday (February 6), and continue throughout the afternoon. For the latest on Mizzou Track & Field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MIZ_TrackField.
