Schweizer won her second straight meet at the Chile Pepper Festival on Oct. 1
COLUMBIA, Mo. – After her second consecutive meet victory, junior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) has been named the Southeastern Conference Runner of the Week, announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Schweizer finished first at the Chile Pepper Festival on Oct. 1, pacing a field of more than 300 runners in the 5000m with a time of 16:09.83, finishing 10 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
The honor marks the second time this season Schweizer has been named SEC Runner of the Week. Schweizer received the award after winning the Commodore Classic on Sept. 12, finishing with a time of 16:46.70.
Schweizer has improved her 5000m personal-record in both of her races this season, as her previous 5000m best was 16:59.30, set on Oct. 2, 2015, at the Notre Dame Invitational. The Tiger junior has now won three races in her career, after winning the Forest Park XC Festival on Sept. 11, 2015.
The distance specialist was named the SEC Cross Country Freshman of the Year in 2014 and earned a Second-Team All-SEC Cross Country selection in 2015 after finishing 14th in the SEC Championships. Schweizer earned All-America honors at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships following a third-place finish in the 5000m.
Mizzou returns to competition in two weeks, when the team splits for meets in either Peoria, Ill., at the Bradley Pink Classic on Oct. 13, or the Pre-National Meet in Terre Haute, Ind., on Oct. 14.
