Harris, Berler, Sharp and Brumfield have great days to back solid start from Montes De Oca
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball wrapped up its Fall World Series after playing a bonus game Friday in which the Black Team, comprised of Mizzou's top fall performers, defeated Gold, 13-2. Brian Sharp (Liberty, Mo.), Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.), Matt Berler (Hoover, Ala.) and Connor Brumfield (Columbia, Mo.) all had huge days at the plate to back RHP Bryce Montes De Oca (Lawrence, Kan.), who went 3.1 innings, allowing one hit and one unearned run with a strikeout. Black allowed just three hits in the nine-inning game.
Sharp got Team Black on the board in the top of the first inning, launching a two-out, 0-2 pitch over the fence in center field for a solo shot, giving Black a 1-0 lead. It was Sharp's second home of the fall. Montes De Oca pitched around trouble in the first, stranding runners on the corners after a single, a walk and a hit batter.
Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) led off the second with an opposite field double and he was singled in on an RBI knock to left by Connor Brumfield (Columbia, Mo.), giving Black a 2-0 lead.
Gold cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third, scoring on a passed ball just one pitch following a key double play turned by Matt Berler (Hoover, Ala.). Gold put two more men on, but struck out AJ Lewis (Chicago, Ill.) to strand a pair.
The tie didn't last long as Berler launched a solo homer to left field to give Team Black a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Black tacked on three more runs in the sixth on a hit and an error, a Berler triple and an Alex Samples (Bridgeport, Texas) two-out single through the right side. That extended the lead to 6-2 before a Brumfield single scored Harris in the seventh, extending the lead to 7-2.
Black blew the game open with four more in the top of the eighth and two more in the ninth. RHP Cole Bartlett (Williamsburg, Ind.) pitched a perfect eighth and RHP Cameron Dulle (St. Louis, Mo.) tossed a shutout ninth.
