COLUMBIA, Mo. – #MizzouMade pitcher Max Scherzer, the ace of Major League Baseball's Washington Nationals, will pitch in his hometown of St. Louis, Mo., on Wednesday as the Nationals take on the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Scherzer, who was named 2005 Big 12 Pitcher of the Year under the direction of head coach Tim Jamieson, is a graduate of Parkway Central High School in St. Louis and attended Mizzou for three seasons (2004-06), helping guide the team to three NCAA Regionals.
Scherzer, who as Mizzou's first-ever first round draft pick in 2006, will pitch in his hometown for just the second time in his career and the first time since his rookie campaign in 2008. In 2008, then with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Scherzer tossed 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs while striking out four.
Since that time, Scherzer has developed into one the league's most dominant pitchers, winning the 2013 American League Cy Young Award with the Detroit Tigers. Prior to the 2015 season, Scherzer signed a seven-year, $210 million contract with the Nationals. He threw a no-hitter earlier this season against Pittsburgh (June 20). He was the second Mizzou player ever to throw a no-hitter in the major leagues, joining Sonny Siebert (1966).
