Junior Markesh Woodson
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Senior Kearsten Peoples clinched her third SEC title on Saturday, highlighting the SEC Indoor Championships' final day of events on Saturday (February 28). Six more Tigers joined her on the podium as top three finishers in the conference, including fellow-senior Jill Rushin (shot put), junior Markesh Woodson (60m dash), and the men's distance medley relay team of juniors Sam Dickerson and Will Crocker, freshman Jerrad Mason, and sophomore Ben Goodman.
All in all, the Tigers closed the two-day championship meet with 14PR's, sevennew All-Time Top Ten marks, and a new Missouri School Record at the hands of Markesh Woodson, who bested his own record time in the 60m dash.
SEC CHAMPION
First up on the podium was Peoples, who returned after her fourth-place finish in the shot put on Friday to take the win in the weight throw, her first conference title in the event since 2011. This was Peoples' return to the ring after she took over the top of the national leaderboard at the Collegiate Challenge, marking in the seventh-best toss in collegiate history with a mark of 22.84m (74-11.25). She didn't quite reach that mark on Saturday, but came through with her career-best series, tossing over 70-feet in four of her six throws. Peoples maxed out at 22.45m (73-8), just shy of the SEC Record, 22.74m (74-7.25).
ALL-SEC
Joining Peoples on the podium was junior Markesh Woodson, who timed through with a breakthough performance in the 60m dash, placing second overall in 6.58. Woodson bested his previous school record (6.60), timed in during his title-winning performance at the 2013 Championships. This is a 0.07-second improvement on his season-best coming into the weekend, and moves him well into NCAA Championships qualification at No. 5 in the NCAA.
The final podium finish came out of the Tigers' final event of the weekend, as the men's DMR cruised to an exciting third-place finish in the field with a final time of 9:46.55. Kicking off the relay was junior Will Crocker, who returned to the track after his fourth-place finish in the mile (4:04.02) to take over the 1200m leg of the DMR. He passed the baton off to Jerrad Mason, who started the 400m leg in third, handing the baton to Ben Goodman for the 800m stretch. Sam Dickerson took over the final leg of the relay, fighting through the 1600m in the lead pack, crossing a mere 0.65-seconds out of second-place.
The first All-SEC finish of the weekend, though, came on Friday when senior Jill Rushin placed second in the shot put competition with a lifetime best performance of 17.61m (57-9.50).
