Tigers shoot 11-under as a team in first round
BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Mizzou Women's Golf shot a collective 11-under par 277 and sits in third place out of 19 teams following the opening round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at the Boulder Creek Golf Club on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers are two shots off the lead as Michigan and San Jose State both shot 13-under.
"We had a very balanced day throughout the team," head coach Stephanie Priesmeyer said. "Sometimes in Las Vegas the wind can really blow and make conditions challenging, but it was a really calm day and we took advantage of those scoring opportunities."
Junior Jessica Meek (Carnoustie, Scotland) continued her strong fall campaign with a 4-under 68. She had five birdies in the round, including three on the back nine and two straight on the front side. Freshman Emma Allen (Southampton, England) shot a 3-under 69 and also birdied three holes on the back nine. Sophomore Clara Young (North Berwick, Scotland) and freshman Amanda Kim (O'Fallon, Mo.) both carded scores of 2-under 68. For Kim, it was her first competitive round since the first tournament of the season at Kansas State on Sept 7-8. Senior Michelle Butler (Dunedin, Fla.) rounded out the strong showing with an even par 72. Fellow senior Haelena Schwemmer (O'Fallon, Mo.) also shot an even par 72 while competing as an individual.
"Jess and Emma had a lot of birdie opportunities that they were able to connect on with the weather favorable for good scores," Priesmeyer said. "It was great to see Amanda fire 2-under today. She was very consistent. Clara had to work a lot harder for her 2-under but she is such a gamer and has a great way of coming back. Michelle had one swing today that cost her a double bogey, otherwise she was right there as well."
The second round begins at 10 a.m. CT on Monday morning. For live scoring, go to https://www.birdiefire.com/tournament/15355/.
