COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou wrestling sophomore J'den Cox was named the MAC Wrestler of the Week for Dec. 29 - Jan. 4, as announced today by the Mid-American Conference (MAC) office. The Columbia, Mo. native improved to 19-0 this season after taking home the 2015 Southern Scuffle 197 pound championship last week in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The honor marks Cox's second MAC Wrestler of the Week recognition this season. Overall, the Tigers have brought home four conference Wrestler of the Week awards in 2014-15. Past winners included redshirt senior Drake Houdashelt (Dec. 8-14), Cox (Nov. 24-30) and redshirt senior Alan Waters (Oct. 27 - Nov. 9).
Cox went a perfect 5-0 at last week's Scuffle which included three consecutive victories over ranked opponents en route to his event championship. In his final three matches, the Columbia, Mo. native took down No. 16 Zach Nye (Virginia), No. 4 Morgan McIntosh (Penn State) and No. 5 Connor Hartmann (Duke).
Dating back to last season, Cox has been the winner of 39 consecutive matches. The sophomore has played a key role into the team's perfect 12-0 start this season and 16 consecutive dual wins as a program dating back to the 2013-14 campaign.
The Tigers look to continue their hot streak this Saturday, Jan. 10 at No. 4 Cornell. Action begins at 1 p.m. (CT) and can be viewed at TrackWrestling.com.
