COLUMBIA, Mo. - Last Friday evening, fans of all ages made their way to Faurot Field the night before Mizzou football's 2014 opening win against South Dakota State for the inaugural Flick on Faurot. The event was a resounding success, as nearly 2,700 fans enjoyed a unique viewing of "The Blind Side" at Memorial Stadium.
Hosted by the Department of Student Life, DSA (Department of Student Activities), MSA/GPC, Mizzou Alumni Association, the Alumni Association Student Board, SAAC and Mizzou Athletics, the free event was open to the public and thousands of University of Missouri students and Columbia, Mo. families took advantage of the special opportunity.
Equipped with their blankets, fans rushed on to the field prior to the film to secure their ideal spot on Faurot Field. Also before the movie, fans were encouraged to take part in Mizzou traditions such as kissing the 50-yard line.
Student Life Campus Activities Coordinator, Kaci Drennan, headed the first time event and was blown away with the support and turnout from Mizzou fans.
"We were so thrilled to see such a large turnout for this event," Drennan said. "Flick on Faurot is something that Kathy Murray, Assistant Director of Campus Activities in the Department of Student Life, has wanted to bring to our campus for a very long time. It was a true collaboration between the Department of Student Life, Intercollegiate Athletics, Mizzou Alumni Association, and MSA/GPC (specifically the Department of Student Activities)."
"This was the first time we have shown a movie at Memorial Stadium and we hope it won't be the last. We intend to make this an annual event for our students. We think it's a great way to get fans excited about the first home football game while giving them a memorable experience!"
The "Flick on Faurot" helped cap an exciting few weeks of activity between Mizzou Athletics and the student body. On August 22 Mizzou announced that its student ticket allotment for football was officially sold out, bucking a national trend of sagging student attendance. Several Mizzou freshman also participated in the annual tradition of painting the iconic Rock M leading into Friday's movie.
"We had a great student and community turnout," Deputy Director of Athletics Doug Gillin said. "I want to thank MU Student Life, SAAC and everyone involved for orchestrating this fantastic event. This was a unique opportunity for our students and community to spend an evening at Faurot Field, watch a movie and help us open the college football season."
"Earlier in the week we had several incoming students help us with the annual tradition of painting the Rock M and to be able to add this new element to the student experience is outstanding. We are continuously trying to create events and experiences that help us build connections with our students and our campus."
