Columbia, Mo. -
Mizzou Golf owns a five-shot lead after 36 holes of play at the 2014 Turning Stone Intercollegiate in Verona, N.Y. Weather slowed play and elevated scores in the opening round, but the Tigers shot a 3-under-par 285 in the second round to extend their lead over second-place Cleveland State.
A pair of Missouri natives, Ryan Zech and Wilson Sundvold, lead the tournament at 1-under-par (143). Sundvold was the lone player under par in the opening round and was even-par in the second round as he looks for his first career victory at the collegiate level. Zech, a 2014 All-American, shot 74 in the first round, but was 3-under-par in round two to finish tied with Sundvold and Cleveland State's Mitchell Moore.
Mizzou has four players among the Top 10 after 36 holes. Sophomore Euan Walker (2014 SEC All-Freshman Team) is tied for sixth and is six shots back of Zech and Sundvold with rounds of 76-73--149, while true freshman, Luigi Botta, is tied for eighth with rounds of 79-71--150. Columbia native Will Echelmeier is 45th, while Jacob Fair is tied for 24th. Fair is playing as an individual this weekend after redshirting the 2013-14 season.
In the team competition Missouri and Cleveland State have raced ahead of the field. The Tigers (300-285) lead the Vikings by five shots (304-286). Detroit is third with rounds of 318-288--606.
Play at the 2014 Turning Stone Intercollegiate concludes with the final round on Monday.
