COLUMBIA, Mo. - Alabama used a goal in the 84th minute to post a 1-0 win over the Mizzou soccer team Sunday afternoon at Walton Stadium. With the loss, the Tigers fell to 10-4-2 overall and 5-3-0 in Southeastern Conference action, while the Crimson Tide improved to 9-4-3 and 4-2-2.
With the match scoreless late in the 84th minute, Alabama's Laura Lee Smith received the ball near midfield and raced toward net. In a one-on-one breakaway with redshirt senior goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein, Smith poked a shot past the Tiger and into goal for a 1-0 Crimson Tide advantage.
The Tigers pressed forward for an equalizer in the remaining minutes but could not break through for the Alabama victory.
Play went back and forth for much of the match, as neither squad could convert on their early chances. Shots from senior Kaysie Clark and freshman Savannah Trujillo went high and wide, respectively, in the opening 20 minutes to keep Mizzou off the score sheet.
The Tigers nearly broke through in the 55th minute on a brilliant strike from Kaitlyn Clark. The freshman unleashed a rocket from just outside the box toward the upper right corner of the net, but Alabama's keeper made a diving save to keep Mizzou off the board.
In the 74th minute, Missouri looked poised to break the scoreless tie as junior Reagan Russell sent a perfect cross into the box from the right flank. Freshman Jessica Johnson headed the pass toward goal but the Crimson Tide keeper got her hand on the shot and the rebound stopped inches away from the goal line before the Alabama defense cleared.
Three minutes later, sophomore Lauren Selaiden unleashed a laser from outside the box but her shot flew wide of the left post.
Alabama then scored the eventual game-winner six minutes later to earn the win.
Sauerwein made season high seven saves in net.
Missouri hits the road next weekend for matches at Ole Miss and Tennessee. The Tigers face the Rebels on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. ET game against the Lady Vols on Sunday, Oct. 26 in a match televised live on ESPNU.
