NO. 23 MIZZOU SET FOR GOLD RUSH VS. NO. 13 GEORGIA
After a week off to catch its breath, the 23rd-ranked Mizzou Tigers (4-1 overall, 1-0 in SEC play) return to the gridiron this Saturday for a big home contest against the No. 13 Georgia Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1). The matchup at Faurot Field/Memorial Stadium will kick at 11 a.m. on CBS.
The Tigers will look to recapture the momentum that last saw them storm back for the biggest 4th-quarter comeback in school history, when they rallied from a 20-7 deficit with just 7:25 to play at No. 13 South Carolina on Sept. 27 to post a thrilling 21-20 win. It was Mizzou's seventh-straight road win dating back to 2013, a mark which is the third-longest road win streak in program history. It also wiped out the distaste of a last-second 31-27 home loss to Indiana on Sept. 20, a game which saw Indiana drive for the winning touchdown with just :22 seconds left in the game.
Georgia has rebounded nicely from a tough 38-35 loss at South Carolina in the second week of the season to post consecutive wins over Troy (66-0), Tennessee (35-32) and Vanderbilt last Saturday (44-17). UGA opened the season with an impressive 45-21 home win over Clemson.
MIZZOU-GEORGIA SERIES HISTORY
Saturday's Mizzou-Georgia game will be just the fourth meeting between the two schools on the gridiron. UGA holds a 2-1 advantage over Mizzou entering the 2014 meeting.
The Tigers and Bulldogs first met in the 1960 Orange Bowl, the first of three trips to Miami, Fla., made by legendary coach Dan Devine's Mizzou squads. Georgia edged the Tigers in that Jan. 1 game by a score of 14-0.
Mizzou and Georgia would not meet again until 2012, when the seventh-ranked Bulldogs served as the Tigers' opponent for their first-ever SEC game in MU's inaugural season in the league. Before a sellout crowd of 71,004, Mizzou held a 20-17 lead late in the third quarter, but Georgia responded by scoring 24-straight points to pull away for a 41-20 win.
Mizzou would exact revenge last season, as the 25th-ranked Tigers traveled to Athens, Ga., and handed the seventh-ranked Bulldogs a 41-26 defeat. Similar to 2012, the game was tight early in the 4th quarter, with Mizzou clinging to a 28-26 lead. But the Tigers this time pulled away, scoring two unanswered TDs to close the game to post MU's first road win at a Top 10 team since 1981.
LAST TIME VS. GEORGIA - MIZZOU 41, GEORGIA 26
Mizzou fell behind at No. 7 Georgia by a 7-0 score, but rallied to score 28 of the next 31 points in the first half, outscoring the Bulldogs 28-3 to take a commanding 28-10 lead into halftime. Georgia found its groove in the third quarter and ultimately pulled to within 28-26 early in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers dug in and answered with two touchdowns to pull away for the big win - Mizzou's first on the road against a top-10 opponent since a 14-3 win in 1981 at No. 9 Mississippi State.
Mizzou got the win despite losing a pair of captains and award candidate players in senior QB James Franklin and senior CB E.J. Gaines to injuries. Redshirt freshman QB Maty Mauk came in and led the Tigers to touchdowns on two of three possessions to help secure the win.
Mizzou's win also broke Georgia's 15-game home winning streak at Sanford Stadium.
Senior WR L'Damian Washington led the charge in Mizzou's 41-26 win at Georgia by catching seven passes for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns, all career highs. His performance included a crucial 40-yard TD reception on a double-pass from fellow WR Bud Sasser with 9:22 left in the game for a 34-26 Tiger lead. Georgia had the play covered well, but Washington went up and outfought the Bulldog defender to make the catch in traffic that stopped UGA's momentum that had seen them score 16 straight points to cut what was a 28-10 MU lead at half to just 28-26 at the time.
Mizzou's opportunistic defense continued its ball-hawking ways, as it forced four Georgia turnovers which proved crucial to the Tigers' 41-26 win. The first was a 2nd-quarter sack/fumble by DE Shane Ray that fellow DE Michael Sam picked up and raced 21 yards untouched for a TD that made it 28-10 Tigers with 5:46 left in the half.
