STARKVILLE, Miss. - No. 16 Mizzou Softball clinched a Southeastern Conference road series win at Mississippi State on Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader at MSU Softball Stadium, winning 8-1. Head coach Ehren Earleywine's squad (27-10, 6-6 SEC) was led on the day by freshman IF/OF Kelli Schkade (Albany, Texas) and junior IF Corrin Genovese (East Amherst, N.Y.), who batted 3-for-5 (.600) and 4-for-8 (.500), respectively.
Redshirt sophomore 2B Ashtin Stephens (Blue Springs, Mo.) put Mizzou in the lead for good in the top of the second inning of game two, connecting on a liner to right field that brought home two Tigers. Schkade started the inning with a one-out walk, and was driven around to third base by a deep double off the center field wall by senior OF Mackenzie Sykes (Blue Springs, Mo.). Stephens' base knock with two outs scored the duo for a 2-0 Mizzou advantage.
Genovese was a responsible for a two-RBI single in third inning action, a ball to right center that brought home freshman 3B/2B Natalie Fleming (Silex, Mo.) and redshirt sophomore SS Sami Fagan (Dunnellon, Mo.). Fleming reached base on a fielder's choice, while Fagan singled earlier in the inning. Their runs set the score at 4-0.
After Schkade hit into a fielder's choice and reached base, both Sykes and freshman C Kirsten Mack (Riverside, Calif.) walked to push Genovese in for a 5-0 lead. Stephens then hit into a fielder's choice that MSU was unable to convert, the resulting error allowed Schkade to run home for a 6-0 Mizzou advantage.
After MSU was able to hit in a triple for one run in the third inning, Mizzou responded with another run created by Genovese's bat. Fleming did the heavy lifting with a two-out double off the center field wall. Genovese then dropped a single into left field to drive in Fleming, setting the score at 7-1 to the Tigers.
The final run in the game two win was a big one for Schkade, her first collegiate home run. The freshman Tiger zipped a line drive over the left field wall to close the game's scoring, 8-1 to Mizzou.
Mississippi State used big spurts of runs in the first, third and fourth innings to take the game one result. MSU had a two-run home run to left field, along with three subsequent singles to score a third run in the opening inning.
Mizzou responded with a run in the top of the third inning with redshirt sophomore OF Taylor Gadbois (Maryville, Mo.) leading off the action with an infield single at MSU's third baseman. A groundout got the Tiger to second base before a single up the middle by junior 3B/C Angela Randazzo (Poway, Calif.) got her home.
The Tigers used a triple to right center field from Schkade to score a second run in the top of the fourth, setting the score at 5-2 to MSU. A fielding error on a grounder allowed Schkade to score from third base.
MSU plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 9-2 lead, utilizing two walks, a hit batter and a fielding error to aid in the advancement of just one hit in the frame.
Mizzou added a run to its effort in the top of the seventh with singles coming from Fagan, Randazzo and Genovese. The third, a liner to center field, allowed Fagan to come around from second base to set the final score at 9-3 in the opponent's favor.
Mizzou returns to action at University Field with Western Illinois on Wednesday, April 9. The doubleheader (3 p.m./5 p.m.) will televised by Mediacom's MC22 channel. Currently at 499 career wins, Earleywine will have the chance to reach his 500th career head coaching victory in front of Mizzou's home crowd.
