INDIANAPOLIS - Mizzou sophomore Sam Tierney advanced to the 100 breast championship final on Friday morning at the 2013 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championship. Tierney secured his first career All-America honor and became only the second Tiger male swimmer to earn first team All-America honors, joining Kevin DeForrest, who earned the honors in the 50 free in 1979.
Tierney tied for seventh in the 100 breast prelims in a time of 52.66 to earn his spot in tonight's championship final. Sophomore Igor Kozlovskij will swim in the evening's consolation final as he placed 11th in the 100 breast with a career best time of 52.83.
Two other Tigers competed in the 100 breast prelims. Junior Mark Conroy placed 25th in 53.85 and senior Jowan Qupty was 34th in 54.22.
Mizzou's 200 medley relay team advanced to the consolation finals with a 14th-place finish in prelims. The team of senior Joe Hladik, Conroy, junior Logan Mosley and Tierney clocked a time of 1:26.15, the third fastest time in team history.
In the 400 IM, sophomore Mack Darragh broke Mizzou's 12-year old school record with a time of 3:46.59 to finish in 19th. The old record of 3:47.38 was set in 2001 by Matt Ferrarelli and was the oldest record in the Mizzou record books. Darragh's previous personal best in the event was 3:48.15, set at the 2013 SEC Championships.
The Tigers also set two new program records in the 800 free relay. The squad of sophomore Eegan Groome, sophomore Alex Glogoza, freshman Max Grodecki and Darragh won their heat in a program best 6:26.67. Additionally, Groome's 200 free leadoff split of 1:35.81 broke his old record in the event. The relay is a timed final, with the remaining three heats to go this evening.
Mosley also competed in the 100 back, where he placed 36th in 47.76.
Day two of the NCAA Championships continue on Friday, March 29 with preliminary action at 11 a.m. ET and finals at 7 p.m. ET.
