No. 12 Mizzou Blasts Lady Braves, Broncos

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Behind strong offense and dominant pitching, the No. 12 Missouri softball team opened their home schedule with two run-rule wins on Friday afternoon. The Tigers kicked off the DeMarini Invitational with a 14-1 win over Alcorn State before following with an 8-0 victory over Boise State.

Mizzou 14, Alcorn State 1 (5)
Alcorn State jumped ahead with an unearned run in the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead. Bianca Armstrong led off the game with a walk and Brittanee Crayton singled through the right side to put a pair of runners on. After a strikeout, a passed ball put the runners in scoring position and Rayanna Davis hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Armstrong.
Mizzou scored a pair in the bottom half of the inning to take the 2-1 lead. Jenna Marston walked and stole second to startthe inning. Two batters later, Ashley Fleming doubled to right field to score Marston. A throwing error on the play allowed Fleming to come all the way in and score the second run of the inning.
In the second, Angela Randazzo led off with a single and a fielding error by the center fielder put two aboard with one out. After a bunt single by Ashtin Stephens loaded the bases, Marston plated a run with a ground out to second base. A wild pitch allowed Rachel Hay to score, making the score 4-1.
The Tigers would put up five runs in each of the last two innings to give them a season-high 14 runs. In the third, Kelsea Roth singled and moved to second on a fielding error to start the inning. Nicole Hudson then delivered her second home run of the season, a two-run shot, to make it 6-1. Randazzo doubled down the line in left and Lindsey Muller singled to put two aboard, setting up an RBI double by Rachel Hay. Stephens added a sacrifice fly to make it 8-1. Hay scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Roth started the fourth with a double, and after a Hudson walk, would score on a two-bagger by Kayla Kingsley down the line in right field. After Kelsi Jones was hit by a pitch, Hay doubled for the second time on the afternoon, clearing the bases and extending the lead to 12-1. Mackenzie Sykes added an RBI single and Corrin Genovese drove in a run on a fielder's choice to push the lead to 14-1.
Three Tigers had two hits apiece, led by Hay who scored three times and drove in three runs. Roth also added two hits and a pair of runs, as did Randazzo. Hudson drove in two runs on the home run, her 25th career blast.
Mizzou 8, Boise State 0 (5)
Missouri picked up where they left off in the opening game, scoring three runs in the first inning to jump ahead of the Broncos. Genovese was hit by pitch with one out, setting up Fleming's fourth home run of the year, a shot to deep center field. With two outs in the inning, Hudson roped a double down the line and was singled in by Randazzo, who blooped a base hit into right field.
Roth's second home run of the season tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third. The line drive shot over the wall in left drove in Fleming, who doubled to the gap in right-center to start the inning.
The Tigers secured the win by run-rule in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring three times on two hits. Roth led off with a single and moved to third after an error on a fielder's choice by Hudson, putting runners on the corners. A wild pitch plated Roth, and two batters later, Lindsey Muller ended the game with her second home run of the season, sending a 2-2 pitch over the wall in center field.
Fleming, Roth and Muller each homered and drove in a pair, while Fleming and Roth had two hits apiece. Thomas allowed just a leadoff single and faced only two batters over the minimum, as she struck out eight to improve to 6-1 on the season.
Missouri returns to action against these same two squads tomorrow afternoon, beginning with Alcorn State at noon. The Tigers will then take on Boise State at 3 p.m. CT. For more information, stay tuned to mutigers.com.
