- Today's contest vs. Miami (Ohio) marks Mizzou's season opener and Head Coach Gary Pinkel's 11th season at Faurot Field. During his tenure at Missouri, Pinkel has transformed a previously downtrodden program into one of the most successful in the nation, with 40 wins and three division titles in the last four years, and a school-record six consecutive bowl game appearances.
- Pinkel stands third on Mizzou's all-time coaching wins list and is only 23 wins shy of the record of 101 by Hall of Fame Coach Don Faurot (101-79-10 from 1935-42, 46-56).
- It was a hot day at Faurot Field, but 58,313 Mizzou fans came out to cheer on their Tigers for the largest Labor Day weekend attendance in 17 years.
- Missouri returns 18 starters this season, including nine on offense, eight on defense and one of the nation's top PKs over the last two years in senior Grant Ressel. Ressel has lined up to try 132 kicks in the last two years and made 127 of them, for an impressive success rate of 96.2% (43-of-46 FGs, 84-of-86 PATs). Today, the PK added another field goal to his total and was 2-2 on extra points.
- Sophomore QB James Franklin earned his first career start against the RedHawks and completed 17-of-26 passes for 129 yards and 1 TD (with 1 INT), while rushing for 72 yards and another TD - career highs both in the air and on the ground. The passing TD was the second of his career, as he had one last year as a true freshman.
- The Tiger defense looked to continue their hard work from the 2010 season, when Mizzou led the Big 12 Conference and ranked 6th in the NCAA in scoring defense, allowing just 16.08 points per game.
- Sophomore LB Andrew Wilson led the team with 10 tackles and senior DL Dominique Hamilton was just behind him with eight.
- Sophomore CB E.J. Gaines grabbed his first career interception in the second quarter off Miami's Zac Dysert. Gaines earned a letter as a true freshman last season, playing in all 13 games and recording 26 tackles in all.
- Marcus Lucas recorded his first career touchdown reception going 10 yards off a pass from Franklin. Lucas saw the field last year as a true freshman, getting snaps in 10 games and catching three passes for 23 yards in all.
- Junior DE Brad Madison was credited with two sacks on the day. Madison picked up where he left of last season when he led the Tigers with 7.5 sacks.
- Redshirt freshman WR Bud Sasser recorded his first career catch when he hauled in a four-yard pass from Franklin.
- Junior WR T.J. Moe saw his first action at punt returning and returned two punts for 30 total yards, including an 18-yard return.
- Junior punter Trey Barrow punted seven times for an average of 44.7 yards per punt. He posted a career high 57-yard punt and put three inside the 20.
