Columbia, Mo. – The NCAA has released its annual Academic Progress Rates for member schools, and once again, the University of Missouri stands out among the very best in the Big 12 Conference. A review of the rates for all Big 12 schools shows that Mizzou leads the league in APR rate for six different sports, a figure which ranks as second-best in the Big 12 (trailing only Texas, with 10 leaders).
The sports of football and softball have brought tremendous pride to Tiger fans for the championships they won on the field this year, and they can also call themselves champions off the field. That's because both sports led the Big 12 in APR, with football checking in at 967 (Multiyear APR), while softball produced a near-perfect 997 (out of 1,000). Other MU sports which led the Big 12 this year include gymnastics (1,000), women's golf (1,000), women's swimming and diving (998) and men's swimming and diving (989).
Missouri had 10 of its 20 programs rank among the Big 12's top three overall. In addition, all but one of Missouri's sports ranked above the All-Division I national average. The highest APR score possible is 1,000.
Here's the Big 12 rankings of schools with the most APR leaders in their respective sports:
1. Texas (10)
2. Mizzou (6)
3. Kansas (3)
4. Baylor (2)
4. Colorado (2)
4. Oklahoma (2)
7. Iowa State (1)
7. Kansas State (1)
7. Nebraska (1)
7. Oklahoma State (1)
7. Texas Tech (1)
Mizzou has ranked either first or second every year within the Big 12 since the inception of the APR rankings.
“We are very proud of the academic accomplishments of our student-athletes,” said Dr. Joe Scogin, Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services. “This is one example of their commitment to academic excellence as they continue to exemplify the core values of our athletic department. Our student-athletes, coaches, academic support staff, and institutional faculty should take pride in the way they represent our institution,” Scogin said.

The APR was developed by the NCAA in 2004 to measure the academic progress and performance of athletic programs at member institutions. The multi-year average for the latest Academic Progress Rate Report spans the last four years and institutions are awarded points when a student-athlete remains academically eligible for competition and when he or she either returns to the institution the following semester or graduates. A maximum of two points per student/per semester is awarded.
The NCAA does not penalize an institution for student-athletes who remain academically eligible but did not return to the institution due to circumstances beyond the student and/or institution's control. Examples of this include student-athletes who leave to pursue professional athletics, suffer from incapacitating physical or mental illness, or experience extreme financial difficulties as the result of a specific event such as a death in the family.
