Columbia, Mo. -- Missouri Women's Golf completed an exciting weekend of play at the 2011 Big 12 Championship on Sunday as the Tigers battled No. 20 Texas and No. 27 Texas A&M down to the wire before finishing third at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo.
Missouri actually tied for the team lead late in the final round, but a pair of Eagles on par-4s by Texas' Madison Pressel and Nicole Vandermade allowed the Longhorns to race away with the team crown. Texas shot an eight-over-par 872, while Texas A&M shot 875 (+11). Missouri was third with a three-round 880 (+16), two shots better than Iowa State (882, +18). The Cyclones entered the weekend as the Big 12's top ranked program nationally (15th).
Missouri defeated five ranked teams this weekend. The Tigers bettered No. 28 Oklahoma (888), No. 46 Texas Tech (889), No. 48 Oklahoma State (891) and No. 31 Colorado (903). The third-place finish by Mizzou was its best at the Championship since a runner-up showing in 2003. That second-place finish also came in Columbia at the Country Club of Missouri.
Mizzou had incredible team balance throughout the weekend. Freshman Taylor Gohn was Mizzou's top performer, finishing ninth overall thanks to a final-round, 1-under-par 71. The Columbus, Ind., native was spectacular her final two rounds overall, shooting 1-under-par combined to earn All-Tournament Team recognition.
Another freshman, Kate Gallagher, also helped keep Missouri in contention all day. The Savannah, Mo., native shot an even-par 72 to move into the Top 35 and log the Tigers' second-best score of the afternoon.
Missouri had four players finish in the Top 20. Junior Marissa Cook finished 11th thanks to a final-round 74, while Hannah Lovelock was tied for 18th.
Nicola Race shot 75 on Sunday to tie for 27th.
Texas' Pressel was the 2011 Big 12 individual medalist. Pressel, fueled by three eagles this weekend, shot 71-66-71—208 to win by five shots. Pressel's 54-hole total was a championship record.
