COLUMBIA, Mo. - This week, MUTigers.com continues to take a closer look at the top performers from the last week of baseball. Mizzou played arch rival Kansas at Kauffman Stadium before playing Oklahoma State in a three game series in Stillwater. Sophomore Blake Brown had a big week at the plate and both Rob Zastryzny and Phil McCormick continued to impress on the hill as the trio has been honored as this week's Mizzou Baseball Players of the Week. Below is a recap of each performer's week.
Player of the Week: Blake Brown
Sophomore outfielder Blake Brown became the first Tiger to homer in three straight games since 2009, as he slammed three solo homeruns in this past weekend's series at Oklahoma State. The Normal, Ill., native now has four career home runs and three this season. Before Friday, Brown had not homered since March 23 last season against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Brown's slugged .765 this past week and he ranks third in the Big 12 in league play with a .667 clip. Brown also drove in three of the Tigers' seven runs this past week.
Co-Pitcher of the Week: Phil McCormick
Tiger lefty reliever Phil McCormick threw four innings of relief work this past week, making an appearance on the mound in all three games of the Oklahoma State series. The senior didn't allow an earned run, and his 20 appearances on the season continue to rank him first among Big 12 pitchers. He held his opponents to a .100 batting average this past week. Overall, McCormick has limited his opponents to a .192 average, which places him fourth among Big 12 pitchers.
McCormick boasts a 2.60 ERA, the best on the team, and also lands him 12th among Big 12 pitchers. He has a 3-2 record with two saves.
Pitcher of the Week: Rob Zastryzny
Freshman Rob Zastryzny continues to prove himself as Mizzou's top starter. The lefty took to the mound on Friday and matched his career-best eight strikeouts in 7.2 innings against Oklahoma State. He allowed just five hits and two earned runs in the outing. Zastryzny also kept his Cowboy opponents to a .192 batting average.
Zastryzny leads the Tiger pitchers in strikeouts with 43, and is second in innings pitched with 49.2. His total innings also tie him for eighth in the Big 12. Zastryzny's ERA of 3.08 is second best on the team and tops among starters.
