Columbia, Mo. -
Missouri Women's Golf battled tough playing conditions on Friday, but are within striking distance after one round of play at the 2011 Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate.
The Tigers shot an opening-round 310, but are just four strokes removed from the Top 10 and just 12 shots outside the top two after 18 holes at the 54-hole event, which is being played at the Ole Miss Golf Course in Oxford, Miss.
Tennessee leads the 18-team event with a first-round 290. The Volunteers have raced to an eight-shot lead over the host Rebels (298), Maryland (298) and Coastal Carolina (298).
It was a balanced effort for Missouri with Hannah Lovelock, Nicola Race and freshman Kate Gallagher each shooting a 77. Another freshman, Taylor Gohn, was Missouri's fourth scorer with a 79.
"There weren't a lot of birdies to be had for anyone today," Head Coach Stephanie Priesmeyer said. "We had some opportunities and I think our team really battled, but conditions tomorrow should improve and I think we will play better after a rough stretch at the start of the day today. I know our team is looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow."
As Priesmeyer alluded to, no team broke par on Friday.
Southern Mississippi's Virginia Espejo leads the event with an opening-round 68. She owns a three-shot advantage over a host of other performers.
Action continues Saturday and concludes on Sunday.
