Austin, Texas-- Competing in the NCAA Division 1 Zone "D" Diving event Saturday afternoon, Missouri freshman Loren Figueroa earned a berth to the NCAA Diving Championships, the first for a Tiger diver since Kendra Melnychuk in 2008. On Sunday, men's divers Dante Jones and David Bonuchi joined her, qualifying for next week's competition.
Figueroa placed second in the 1 meter event with 631.70 points, finishing just behind standout Minnesota diver Kelci Bryant (643.65). As one of the top three finishers, 'Figgy' automatically qualifies for the NCAA Diving Championships, held next weekend, March 17-19. The Championships will also take place at the University of Texas Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Dante Jones placed fourth for the Tigers in the men's 1 meter dive Friday night, just missing an NCAA qualification with his score of 707.60. In the women's 3 meter dive, Jordan Morcom finished 14th with 565.95 points, while Sharon Finn took 15th with a score of 564.10.
On Sunday the Tigers dominated the men's platform event. David Bonuchi claimed the victory, placing first in the field with 794.80 points. Dante Jones' third place finish (720.35 points) qualified him to advance to NCAAs as well.
Bonuchi also finished in third place in the 3 meter dive, while Jones took fifth in the event. Both divers will compete in all three NCAA diving events (1 meter, 3 meter and platform), while Figueroa will compete in both 1 meter and 3 meter.
