COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou wrestling squad opened their season with the annual Black and Gold exhibition on Sunday morning, wrestling 24 matches on two mats at the Hearnes Center. Due to the number of matches there was no team score, however almost every Tiger on the roster was able to get at least one match in to prepare for the upcoming season. A solid crowd packed the Hearnes, as 612 fans were in attendance for the wrestle-offs.
Several Tigers impressed on the day, including Alan Waters, who defeated freshman Boomer Boyd by an 18-3 technical fall at 125 pounds. Brent Haynes made quick work of Ryan Robinson at 197, also winning by technical fall, 15-0, in 3:08. Haynes took Robinson down early and turned him several times in the first period to get out to an early 14-0 lead. An escape in the second after starting down ended the bout.
Sophomore Zach Toal recorded the only win by fall on the day, pinning Jordan Gagliano in 4:07 at 165 pounds. Redshirt freshman Drake Houdashelt and junior Nathan McCormick each went 2-0 on the day. McCormick opened with an 8-2 decision over Mike Schmidt and later scored a major decision on Simon Kitzis, winning 10-2. Houdashelt defeated Nick Gregoris in a tight match, winning 3-2with a third period takedown, and closed out the day with a win over Austin Lindsay, majoring him 10-1.
On Mat 1, Gregoris opened the day with a 1-0 decision over Lindsay, scoring a second period escape. Kitzis defeated Eric Wilson in his first match of the day at 133 pounds, winning 7-4. Senior Brandon Wiest and junior Nicholas Hucke battled to the riding time portion of the overtime tiebreaker, with Wiest racking up 18 seconds of riding time in the period to pull out the win.
Also on Mat 1, Kyle Bradley exploded with a big third period to major Kellen Bounous, 9-1. Leading 1-0 going into the final period, Bradley scored an escape, two takedowns and a point off a stall warning to go with 2:42 of riding time. Seniors Dorian Henderson and Patrick Wright battled to sudden victory at 174 pounds, with Henderson pulling off a takedown with 30 seconds left in the period, giving him the 4-2 win. Mike Larson used a third period escape and takedown to separate himself from Clarence Neely, with Larson taking the 5-2 win. In the lone heavyweight bout of the day, redshirt freshman Devin Mellon defeated Jake Glore, 4-2. Mellon took down Glore in the first and got a third period escape with 2:09 of riding time.
On Mat 2, Robinson kicked off action at 197 with a 6-1 win over Justin Heberlie. Freshman Denny Kleinschrodt scored an early takedown and near fall on fellow 133-pounder Taylor Ronan to pace his 8-0 major decision, while Brandon Rice edged Harold Ritchie by a 5-3 decision in a battle between 141 pound freshmen. In a pair of 149 pound matches, Trevor Wiest scored three takedowns on Espen Conley to earn a 7-5 win, while Gary Lindsay used a third period escape and riding time to defeat TJ Parker, 3-2.
At the 165/174 pound match, freshman Cody Johnston impressed with a 12-3 major decision over Ty Prazma. Johnston scored a pair of two-point near falls, and also had a third period reversal and takedown to pad his lead. Todd Porter built a 5-0 lead after two periods to pace his 6-1 victory over Dustin Williams. At 133, Wilson earned a 15-6 major decision over Schmidt in an action-packed match. Wilson was taken down by Schmidt early, but reversed him and landed two near falls in the first. Schmidt reversed Wilson back, but Wilson escaped to make it 9-4 after the first. After a scoreless second, Wilson picked up an escape, takedown and two-point near fall to extend his lead to 14-4. Schmidt would hit another reversal but that was all he would get, as Wilson picked up the riding time point.
Jake Cyr followed at 141 pounds with an 8-1 victory over Brandon Rice, with Cyr landing three takedowns on rice in the match. Jacob Guerrant and Gary Lindsay closed out the day at 149, with Guerrant pulling out a 2-1 win with a third period escape and riding time point.
Missouri opens up the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. CT against the Purdue Boilermakers. The match between two anticipated top-25 programs will be held in the Hearnes Center.
