PEORIA, Ill. - The Mizzou women's cross country team finished first out of 21 squads on Friday (Oct. 14) at the eighth annual Bradley Classic, giving the Tigers their first team title of the season. The dry, 61-degree weather made for good running conditions at Newman Golf Course.
Junior Bailey Belvis (Prosper, Texas) finished eighth in the 6K race, while freshman Liz Reida (Springfield, Mo.) came in 10th and freshman Courtney Brown (Palatine, Ill.) was 12th, giving Mizzou a trio of top-15 finishers. Other runners who contributed to the Tigers' victory were senior Laura Roxberg (Overland Park, Kan.) in 19th place, sophomore Marie O'Leary (Normal, Ill.) in 21st, freshman Courtney Wood (Neosho, Mo.) in 24th, and senior Aimee Bonte (Fenton, Mo.) in 30th. The Tigers' seven student-athletes combined for an average time of 21:47.71, and their consistency as a group enabled Mizzou to finish ahead of second-place Illinois State by a comfortable 23-point margin.
The Tigers formed most of the leading group early in the race, with Belvis standing third at the 2K mark. Mizzou extended its lead at the halfway point, with Reida, Brown and O'Leary coming into the top 15. Belvis held her position in the head pack until the end, and Reida and Brown moved up steadily down the homestretch to seal the victory.
Mizzou's men's squad will run Sunday (Oct. 16) at the NCAA Pre-Nationals at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind. After this weekend's action, the Tiger men and women will travel to College Station, Texas, on Oct. 29 for the Big 12 Championships, hosted by Texas A&M University.
