Mizzou Began Competition at Wake Forest

Oct. 1, 2011

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -The Missouri tennis team went 2-2 in singles action, including an impressive win by freshman Alex Clark, at the Wake Forest Invitational Friday.

Clark defeated Winthrop's Sandra Herrera 7-6 (4) in the first set and dominated her second set, 6-0, to take the match. After Friday's play, Clark now has a 3-1 record since joining the Tigers.

“We need to be competing as much as possible, so this is another great tournament for us,” Mizzou Head Coach Sasha Schmid said. “I was disappointed with our doubles play. We have been working hard on doubles in practice and we need to see the practice translate over to competition.”

Junior Maria Christensen claimed both her sets against UNC-Greensboro's Alex Whitehead 6-0, 6-3. The victory gives Christensen a record of 4-1 in singles action this fall.

The Tigers went 0-2 in the doubles flight after day one. The pairing of Christensen and freshman Ashleigh Chiaf fell 8-2 while the duo of Clark and sophomore Rachel Stuhlmann put up a fight against Radford's Hannah Crawford and Meg Napolitano but came up short 9-8 (5).

Mizzou will continue competing at the Wake Forest Invitational Oct. 1-2.
