Mizzou Basketball Post Game Notes
January 5, 2011 vs. North Alabama - Mizzou Arena
Mizzou 98, UNA 58
Postgame Notes
- Mizzou's win on Wednesday marked its 14th win of the season as it improved to 14-1 during the non-conference slate. The 14-1 mark matches the program record for best non-conference mark in history. The 1989-90 team also won 14 of 15 non-conference games. The 14-1 start is the best by the Tigers since that season as well.
- Mizzou extended its non-conference home winning streak to 57 straight games. Head coach Mike Anderson, now in his fifth season at Mizzou, has yet to lose a non-conference home game during his tenure with the Tigers.
- The win is also the Tigers' 68th over the last two-plus seasons. That mark ties the Tigers for fifth nationally with Pittsburgh and Butler in that span.
- Mizzou is currently riding a nine-game winning streak, marking the third time that that has happened since Mike Anderson took over the program. The last time that it happened was last season.
- Seven players scored in double figures on Wednesday, marking the second time in five games that the Tigers accomplished that feat. Prior to that run, Mizzou had not seen seven players score in double figures in a single game since 1995. The seven players to score in double figures were Ricky Kreklow, Matt Pressey, Michael Dixon, Marcus Denmon, Laurence Bowers, Justin Safford and Kim English.
- The Tigers' lone senior Justin Safford finished the game with a season-high 16 points. His previous season-best was 14 in the Tigers' win over Presbyterian.
- The Tigers assisted on 23 of 35 made field goals (66-percent) in the contest. Sophomore guard Mike Dixon dished a career-best nine of those assists, despite coming off the bench midway through the first, playing only 27 minutes. Seven different players finished the game with at least one assist.
- Mizzou's bench was great in the win, totalling 40 points. Conversely, UNA scored just 16 points off the bench. Of those 40 points off the bench, 36 came from Dixon, Safford and Kreklow.
- Since the Tigers' overtime win over Vanderbilt, Mizzou has ripped off seven wins by an average of 26.7 points per game. Mizzou has limited its opponents to 35-percent shooting in that span while holding teams to an 81-137 assist-to-turnover margin.
- Mizzou connected on 16-of-18 shot from the free throw line, good for a season-best 88-percent. In fact, that marks the fourth time this season that Mizzou has shot at least 80-percent from the line this season and the sixth time that Mizzou has shot at least 75-percent.
- Mizzou forced 22 UNA turnovers in the game and converted them into 33 points.
First Half Notes
- Junior guard Kim English scored 20 points in the first half alone on 7-of-10 shooting, including 6-of-7 from distance. The 20 points in the first half alone match his total from the previous three games combined. The 20 points in the first also passed his previous season high, which was 18 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. English hit five of his six 3-point baskets in the final 4:13 of the first half.
- English's 20 points in the first half were the most by a Tiger in a single half this season. Of course that is not counting Marcus Denmon's 21 points scored after the break against Vanderbilt, because he scored six of those 21 in overtime during that game.
- Mizzou closed the half on a 16-4 run in the final 2:53 of the first half. 12 of the Tigers' 16 points in that span came from English, all on 3-point baskets. In fact, Mizzou outscored UNA 24-7 in the final 5:21 of the first half.
- Mizzou stayed true to its style in the first half and turned North Alabama over 14 times, which led to 26 Tiger points. Mizzou also played pretty efficiently offensively, assisting on 16 of its 21 made field goals while boasting a 1.78 assist-to-turnover margin. The Tigers also scored eight fast break points in the first half while holding UNA to 0.
- Mizzou shot lights out from deep in the first half, connecting on 9-of-13 shots from 3-point range. Of course English was 6-of-7 but Dixon, Denmon and Pressey combined to hit 3-of-5 from deep as well.
- Mizzou also dominated the paint in the first, outscoring UNA, 18-8, in the lane. The Tigers also controlled the glass and pulled in 28 rebounds to UNA's 15 in the first half.
- The Tigers' 57 points matches its first half high this season, which was originally set against Northern Illinois. The 50-point half marks the third time this season that Mizzou has posted 50 points in the first half this season, all three of which have come in the last five games.
