COLUMBIA, Mo. – Missouri shortstop Jenna Marston was honored by the Baseball Writer's Association of America at a dinner and banquet in downtown St. Louis, Mo., on Sunday night, earning recognition for her successes on both the softball and baseball diamonds over the course of the past year.
Amidst a crowd that featured current Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa, first baseman Albert Pujols and pitcher Adam Wainwright, along with legends like Ozzie Smith and Whitey Herzog, Marston was given the John E. Wray Award, given to those with achievements in sports other than professional baseball.
Last year, as a freshman, Marston was a First Team All-Big 12 selection, a Second Team All-Midwest Region honoree and was picked to the All-Big 12 Tournament Team. She finished the year with a .366 batting average, five home runs and 52 runs batted in while also stealing 15 bases and scoring 47 runs. Her 68 hits were the 10th most in a single season at Mizzou and the second most in the Big 12 last year, while her 16 doubles were the third most in a single season at Missouri and was the third highest total amongst Big 12 competitors.
During the summer of 2010, Marston was selected to play for the USA National Women's Baseball Team, who competed in the IBAF Women's Baseball World Cup in Venezuela. Marston was selected to the All-Tournament Team after posting the second highest batting average during the tournament (.593) and leading all tournament competitors with 16 hits and eight doubles. She finished with 12 runs scored, seven runs batted in, was a perfect 3-for-3 on stolen bases, and posted a team-best .636 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of .889, second-highest on the team. Marston and Team USA beat Venezuela 15-5 to take home the bronze medal.
Marston and the Tiger softball team kick off their season in just under a month when they'll head out to San Diego, Calif., for the San Diego Classic. Stay tuned to mutigers.com for more information.
