Victoria, BC - Missouri swimmer Dominique Bouchard finished her first day of competition at the Canadian World Championship Trials on a high note, taking bronze in the 100 backstroke event with a lifetime best finish of 1:01.02.
Bouchard is competing at the Saanich Commonwealth place for the opportunity to represent her country at the World Championships, held this summer in Shanghai. While only the top two finishers in each event qualify, her time was faster than the FINA A time standard.
Bouchard's bronze medal finish gives her confidence and momentum heading into her best event, the 200 backstroke. She will continue competition over the weekend.
Update: Bouchard qualified for the World University Games with her bronze medal finish in the 200 back Saturday. She finished the event in 2:10.30, just ahead of fellow Missouri swimmer Lauren Lavigna, who finished fourth in 2:10.80. Bouchard will represent Canada at the Games held in August. Lavigna also led off a relay with her club team, earning a gold medal and setting a new Canadian record.
