Freshman Alan Waters edged out No. 14 Frank Perrelli by a 3-0 score for his 30th win of the season. Waters scored an escape and takedown in the second after starting on bottom, pacing his victory.
At 133, sophomore Nathan McCormick pitched the second straight shutout for the Tigers, as he knocked off his opponent 6-0. McCormick finished the first with a 2-0 lead after a takedown and escaped in the second to make it 3-0. A snap takedown by the sophomore pushed his lead to 6-0 after two, and he rode strong on top to accumulate 4:37 in riding time.
Senior Todd Schavrien made it 9-0 Tigers with a decision at 141, beating Michael Nevinger by a 5-1 final. Schavrien took Nevinger down in the first and picked up a reversal in the second after starting on bottom.
From there, Cornell won the next five matches, scoring three straight decisions before a major and a technical fall to make it 18-9.
Sophomore Brent Haynes and junior Dom Bradley each picked up wins at their respective weight class, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Big Red's strong surge in the middle.
Haynes edged out Maciej Jochym by a 4-2 score, overcoming an early takedown by Jochym in the first period. Haynes would escape after the takedown, and scored another takedown in the second to take the lead. The Tiger sophomore took top in the third, hoping to score a fall and close the gap, but couldn't come up with one. The win was the 20th of the year for Haynes.
The Tigers needed a win by fall at heavyweight to tie the dual and advance by criteria, but Cornell's Clinton Snyder kept Bradley's pin attempts at bay as the Tiger junior won by a 5-0 score. Bradley took Snyder down in the first and picked up a couple of escapes in each period to go with a stall warning point for win number 15.
The Tigers look to stay alive later this evening at 5 p.m. CT as they'll face the winner of the Purdue-Central Michigan match. Tune back in to our live blog as the match nears for full details, which can be found at mutigers.com.
