COLUMBIA, Mo. - Tiger senior Paola Ampudia (Cali, Colombia) was selected as an honorable mention All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) as announced on Wednesday (Dec. 15). Ampudia is the Tigers' first AVCA All-American since 2006 when Jessica Vander Kooi was selected as an honorable mention team member. Ampudia led the Tigers with 493 kills this season, the third-best total in school history, while setting the school record for attacks with 1,380 this season.
Ampudia played just two seasons at Mizzou after transferring from Miami Dade Community College prior to the 2009 season. She ends her career as one of the most prolific attackers in program history as she tallied 903 kills in her two seasons as a Tiger, averaging 4.03 kills per set. She will graduate as the school record holder in kills in single match (35), attacks in a single match (78), kills in a three-set match (26), attacks in a single season (1,380 - 2010) and has the second-most kills in back-to-back seasons in program history with her 903 combined kills in 2009 and 2010. She is also the Big 12 record holder for kills in four-set match with her 35 at Kansas last season.
Ampudia saw marked improvement as a six-rotation player in 2010 as her digging numbers improved drastically from 2009 to 2010. In fact, she pulled in 283 digs this season, which ranked third on the team, while averaging 2.38 per set. She also ranked second on the team in blocks with 69 and was first in solo blocks with 20 this season. She finished the season with 13 double-doubles as well.
In all, Ampudia totaled 548.5 total points this season, the fifth-best single season mark in program history. She was named Big 12 Player of the Week twice in 2010 and even took home AVCA/Sports Imports National Player of the Week on Nov. 9 for her efforts in a pair of road wins at Colorado and No. 12 Iowa State. She was honored as a unanimous All-Big 12 selection, an AVCA All-Central Region first team selection and was a member of the Penn State Regional All-NCAA Tournament team as well.
