
Wrestlers Receive Academic Accolades

Columbia, Mo. – Five members of Missouri's fifth-ranked wrestling team received Academic All-Big 12 accolades as announced by the league office. Four Tigers, John Andrews (McLean, Va.), Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.), Joey Garrity (Orion, Ill.) and Marcus Hoehn (Farmington, Mo.) received first-team honors, while senior Andrew Sherry (Sewickley, Pa.) was named to the second team. This marks the Missouri wrestling programs' second highest Academic All-Big 12 total, with six individuals crowned in 2005. Additionally, this marks the first time since 2005 that the Tigers had four wrestlers named to the first team.
A total of 23 grapplers from the five Big 12 schools that boast wrestling squads were named to the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 team. Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma recorded a league high five selections each on the team.
Askren is a three-time first team academic All-Big 12 recipient, while Andrews, Garrity, Hoehn and Sherry are first-time recipients of the annual award. Askren becomes Missouri's fourth wrestler to earn three or more Academic All-Big 12 first team honors.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and media relations offices, the wrestling academic all-league squad consisted of 16 first team members combined with seven on the second team. First team members have recorded a 3.20 or better grade-point average (GPA), while the second team are those with a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or in the two previous semesters and have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
